Harnessing the power of the sun to break the cycle of poverty
The Challenge
600 Million Africans lack electricity, this is about 40% of the total population.
Solar panels are currently 60% cheaper and 40% more efficient than they were ten years ago
Solar power is taking off in Asia – Pacific, Europe and South America, it has not reached most of Africa – only South Africa and Morocco are making big gains in the solar space
Nevertheless, Africa’s solar / photovoltaic potential is far greater than any other continent
Even where the electricity grid is functional, in many locations power is only supplied for a few hours a day.
Off grid electricity generation relies primarily on gas or diesel powered generators
Dependence on fossil fuel increases poverty, feeds corruption, authoritarian tendencies, conflict over scarce resources.
At SunRoots, we see this as a solvable problem
Using local expertise in solar panel and battery storage production and electrical engineering, provide access to solar power for electricity in places that sorely need it, especially those facing the worst effects of climate change.
Approach
SunRoots offers a bold and sustainable solution: harnessing solar energy to create opportunity and break the cycle of poverty. We believe that every ray of sunshine can become an opportunity to learn, undertake new ventures, provide healthcare, connect with others, and empower oneself.
Our approach is based on:
Installing decentralized solar systems in rural and peri-urban areas where the electricity grid is absent or unreliable.
Local training and employment, particularly for women and young people, to create an inclusive solar value chain.
Supporting energy entrepreneurship by transforming access to electricity into a lever for economic development.
Reducing dependence on fossil fuels by promoting a clean, democratic, and sovereign energy transition.
Services
With SunRoots, access to solar energy becomes a driver of economic, social and climate development.
Customized solar solutions that meet community needs.
Capacity building for community members on solar installation, repair, maintenance and
usage.
Reducing dependency on gas or diesel powered generators in off-grid locations
Boosting access to health, education, agricultural and business services through reliable solar-powered electricity
Examples: solar powered cold rooms, solar powered water pumps, solar solar solutions for schools and clinics,, solar charging stations
Your support fuels progress and brings hope where it's needed most.
